Senior Mechanical Engineer (Costing & Supplier Management)
Our client is looking for a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with strong capabilities in cost planning, supplier engagement, and subcontractor coordination. The successful candidate will combine solid technical expertise with commercial insight, using established industry relationships to achieve competitive pricing and smooth project execution. Mandarin proficiency is essential for effective communication and negotiation with China-based contractors and suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee mechanical engineering design reviews and provide technical direction throughout project lifecycles.
- Develop detailed cost estimates, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and tender documentation for mechanical scope.
- Manage negotiations with suppliers and subcontractors, utilising professional networks to obtain competitive pricing and dependable delivery timelines.
- Communicate effectively in Mandarin with China-based main contractors and suppliers to ensure clear understanding of technical specifications and commercial terms.
- Assess contractor and subcontractor submissions to ensure compliance with project specifications and requirements.
- Work closely with project managers, procurement teams, and site engineers to ensure alignment between costing, budgets, and project timelines.
- Track project progress, identify cost deviations, and propose appropriate mitigation measures.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, safety requirements, and company procedures.
- Support and mentor junior engineers while contributing to process improvements.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's degree is an advantage).
- At least 8-10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, including a minimum of 5 years with contractors or subcontractors.
- Demonstrated experience in cost estimation, tender preparation, and supplier negotiation.
- Strong network of suppliers within the mechanical and construction sectors.
- Familiarity with project management software, costing tools, and ERP systems.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and leadership capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Fluent Mandarin (written and spoken) required to liaise with China-based contractors and suppliers.
Preferred Attributes
- Practical experience in construction environments such as contractor/subcontractor roles, M&E, or infrastructure projects.
- Good understanding of local pricing benchmarks and market practices.
